LADIES FUN DAY 10th  APRIL 2018

Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us and after a very wet spring the fun day went ahead on 10th April without the convenience of any trolleys. The format was then altered to 3 clubs and a putter so as many ladies as possible were able to play.

Maureen Sinclair did her usual magnificent job of making sure that everything ran as smoothly as possible and undeterred 10 teams of 3 took to a rather wet and muddy course to play 11 holes.

Despite the conditions the many ladies decided to play and spirits were not dampened

Anne and Pam ran the raffle which raised a grand total of  £167 for the garden

The format also included a free throw each and one yard of tape to be used wherever you deemed a good idea

The cards were carefully checked and prizes awarded to first, second and third teams

Some ladies that had not been able to play then joined us for a marvellous lunch prepared by David and afterwards Marion was presented with a chocolate cake as a thank you from the ladies for all her hard work over the past year as Captain as this was her last event before handing over the reins to Jo.

PRESENTATION DINNER DANCE

Congratulations to the ladies who won trophies for competitions throughout the year.  Several were presented with them at the Presentation Dinner Dance held in February.

Other winners were Carolyn, Myra, Kathy, Bie, Marion, and Barbara H.  The evening was attended by 76, we had wonderful food produced by David and his team. Music was played for us by the Sirius Band, and the dancing went on late into the night.  A cheque for £11,782.25 was presented to Ivor from Cardiomyopathy UK.

A good proportion of this total was raised by some of the ladies completing a sponsored marathon swim so very well done and many thanks to Marion, Meghan, Kathy, Barbara and Jo for all their efforts.

LADIES DINNER 2018

The Ladies Dinner in January proved to be one of the highlights of the year.

We were greeted by John, Peter and Philip who served pink prosecco before our delicious meal.

The room looked fantastic thanks to Aileen and Kathy who helped with the decoration using pink balloons and thousands of fairy lights.

We were entertained at the tables by Marco the magician while eating a delicious meal cooked by our chef David. Then Marco further entertained us with his cabaret act.  We followed his magic by much dancing on into the evening and generally having a great time.

Prizes were then awarded and congratulations to the prize winners; Jo E and Aileen for the Ping competition; Anne B-G for coming 4th out of 104 to reach the finals of an all-England competition; Fran who won the Past Captains; Jackie Reed who’s had an amazing year winning the “greatest number of Birdies”, the Summer and Winter Eclectic in Div 1 and the Club Medal winner, Chase your Dream Trophy; Carolyn coming second, Summer and Winter Eclectic in Div 1; and Bie winning Summer & Winter Eclectic Div 2 with Monica and Lyn Onslow coming second.  Of course, there are several other ladies who won competitions who will be presented their trophies on Presentation night.

Ladies Christmas Fun Day

Thirty three ladies attended the Christmas Fun Day and everyone entered into the Christmas Spirit wearing a whole array of Christmas jumpers, hats and headpieces.

Maureen Sinclair, aided and abetted by members of the Ladies Committee, organised a fun competition for teams of three and the successful teams were

First place Shirley, Annette and Gillie

Second place Barbara, Breda and Jo

Third place Kathy, Helen and Lyn

Jo won the longest drive and Karen took the NTP prize on the 5th and Jacky Reed the NTP prize on the 17th

Well done to all our Christmas winners

Afterwards we all enjoyed another delicious meal with poppers and crackers

And balloons adding to the fun although some were more successful than others in blowing up the balloons

Success! This is how you do it!

We also helped both Barbara and Carol celebrate their birthdays and they were kind enough to share their gorgeous chocolate birthday cake.

Everyone agreed that it was a very successful day so many thanks to Maureen Sinclair for all the organisation of the teams, competition, prizes and food.

Division 3 Ladies Celebratory Evening

The Division 3 Ladies enjoyed a celebratory evening at the Henry VIII restaurant. Shirley Harris, the team Captain congratulated all those who had helped the team to a successful result and looked forward to next year with a committed team.

A special mention was given to Norma Russell who competed in all eight matches, won 6 and halved 1.

Well done Norma.

The Ping 4BB Plate Final – 2017

Jo Eames and Aileen Oliver represented Sweetwoods Park in the Ping 4BB Plate Final held at Gainsborough Golf Club, Lincolnshire on 4th September.

Although they did not make it to the winner’s podium they were in equal 14th position and best score of the Sussex Golf Club contenders

Nine of our past Captains’ plus our Vice Captain Elect visited Old Thorns Golf Club, Haslemere for two days of friendly competition on September the 10th and 11th.

Fran Pryor was successful in beating off all her fellow past Captain’s despite the weather. As well as the trophy and prize she has been awarded the honour of arranging the trip next year!

The Absent Friends Trophy and Amen Corner – 2017

The Absent Friends Trophy and Amen Corner was played on 12th September with a number of players taking part.

This was the first year that the trophy was awarded and is a way to remember our Lady members who are no longer with us.

Jackie Reed won the Absent Friends Trophy and Marion Gatland was presented with the crystal glass as winner of the Amen Corner.

Captain’s Cup Competition – 2017

The Captain’s Cup Competition was played on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th September. This is one of the highlights of the Ladies golfing calendar and always well supported. The theme this year was ‘Schooldays’ with Lady Captain Marion Gatland’s team playing in pink and Lady Vice Captain Jo Eames playing in purple.

After the Greensomes matches on Saturday the score was all square so there was all to play for on the Sunday singles matches with lots of friendly rivalry.

Despite Jo’s team best efforts (with lots of matches settled on 17th or 18th) the cup went to the Lady Captain’s team.

Many of the ladies entered into the spirit of the ‘schooldays’ theme with a variety of costumes

We all then enjoyed yet another excellent meal provided by our chef, David.

Never mind Jo, you have next year to try again!

LADIES INVITATION DAY – 2017

The Ladies Invitation day was held on the 5th September 2017 and fortunately the weather was not too unkind.

Mike and Doreen Baldock manned the registration desk to make sure our guests had all they needed to enjoy the day and also to explain the ‘Air Miles’,  which proved very successful.

The main Club Captain, Geoff Snape, acted as starter,  to ensure the ladies and their guests were welcomed to the first tee.

Pam Rich and Maureen Briggs ran the raffle.

Then Pam went on to help Jacky Pollock, Liz Vizard and others to run the half way house. This was, as ever, so well supported by the Lady members with a wide selection of savoury and sweet treats on offer. It is becoming a feature,  which Sweetwoods Ladies can be very proud.

The winners of the Air Miles prizes were:-

1st  – Jan Hook and her guest Linda Watts from Chartham Park

2nd –   Janie Hartle and her guest Judith Crockford from Copthorne

3rd  – Sally Pitman and her guest Carol Popplewell from Cuckfield

The three main prize winners were:-

1st Brenda Gilbey and her guest Jane Cover from Ifield

2nd Lyn Onlsow and her guest Alma Turner from Crowborough Beacon

3rd Anne Burton-Gow and her guest Catherine Malins from Cottesmore

We enjoyed excellent meal provided by our chef David and all agreed it had been another very successful day for the Ladies Section.

 Ladies Division 2 Team

Sweetwoods Ladies Division 2 team were successful in the quarter finals played at Ifield Golf Club against West Sussex.

Anne Thorpe, Brenda Gilbey, Anne Burton-Gow, Jo Gregson-Williams , Jan Hook, Janie Hartle and

Liz Vizard.

Well done to the winning team and good luck ladies as you go through to the semi finals at Seaford

on 9th August.

SEAFORD GOLF CLUB JULY 2017

The sun shone for the Sweetwoods Park Ladies Section on their trip to Seaford Golf Club. Twenty six ladies in total took part and played Tuesday and Wednesday. We were very well catered for by the staff and enjoyed a five course meal with a glass or two of wine, followed the next morning with a hearty breakfast before taking to the course once more.

The weather was perfect and the views spectacular.

All agreed it was a very well organised break so many thanks must go to Marion Gatland, Lady Captain.

Winning teams were :-

Tuesday 4th Anne Burton-Gow, Aileen Oliver and Jan Hook

Wednesday 5th Laura Courage, Anne Burton-Gow and Sylvia Key

Anne Burton-Gow also took the NTP prize on both days (well played Anne). Jo Eames was Straightest Drive day one and Shirley Harris Straightest Drive day two

Jo Eames, Lady Vice Captain is already planning the 2018 trip

The SOGGS Match

The SOGGS match was a very finely contested competition with the ‘Old Gals’ gaining 46 points and the ‘Old Guys’ 45.  Sue Hay, as the Ladies Representative on the Seniors Committee, was very pleased to accept the trophy from John Gatland, Past Captain.

Mike Reid Memorial

The Mike Reid Memorial was played on Sunday 21st and Pat Reid was on hand to present the trophy. There was a very good turnout as lots of members wanted to pay their respects to Mike who held the post of Captain twice and was a major influence on many members and aspects of the club.

Exchange Day at Tyrrells Wood

Our lady members enjoyed an exchange day at Tyrrells Wood with good weather which lasted until we were all safely back in the Clubhouse. It proved to be a challenging course but all agreed it was a very successful day. We were very well catered for by the staff from the Marshall, who provided helpful information on the first tee, to the catering staff, who provided a very good two course meal which was much appreciated after a  long round.

Thanks must go to Marion Gatland, Lady Captain for all the organisation.

Goodbye to Vicky

Marion Gatland, Lady Captain, and some of her committee bade a very reluctant farewell to Vicky. She was presented with cards and a voucher to thank her for all her hard work on behalf of the Ladies section. We all wish her well in her new position.

Captain’s Drive In

The lady members said farewell to our past Lady Captain, Brenda Gilbey after a very successful and enjoyable year as she putted out on the 18th green. The incoming captains Geoff Snape and Marion Gatland were in attendance to hold the flag stick.

Marion Gatland, Lady Captain 2017/2018

Marion’s first drive as Lady Captain was most impressive and a fitting start to what will surely be another year of success for the ladies section.

We then welcomed Geoff and Marion to the 1st tee in order for them to drive off and so begin their captaincy

The Sweetwoods Park ladies enjoying a stimulating session on golf rules.

We welcomed Donna Davis, the Sussex County LGA rules expert, to Sweetwoods to talk some of our ladies. As the 2017 golfing season begins we found it extremely useful to have the opportunity to ask Donna to clarify some of the myriad rules.

We spent an hour and a half out on the course looking at various scenarios. Some of that time we used to ask Donna for a full explanation of the rules for dropping the ball when we occasionally go into the first ditch on the 14th.

A reminder that we have a local rule at Sweetwoods Park to give a free drop off bridges so when playing away matches always check their local rules.

Maybe this was clarification that heading straight down the fairway is always the best idea

Either discussing rules about casual water or checking we have not lost anyone.

We then enjoyed a very good lunch of sandwiches, tea and coffee provided by Mike and his staff followed by a question and answer session.

The ladies agreed that this would be a very good annual event and should prove especially informative in 2019 when the updates rules will be put in place.

Winter Ball & Presentation Dinner

67 members attended the Winter Ball where we were very ably catered for by the waiting staff and entertained by Sirius, a three piece group who ensured that the dance floor was never empty. All agreed it was a most enjoyable evening with many trophies presented not least to one of our lady members, Tracy Poulsom. Well done Tracy.

The Lady Captain, Brenda Gilbey, welcomed the representative of her charity, Chestnut House, to the Sweetwoods presentation dinner and winter ball. She was presented with a cheque for £6,500 collected from various fund raising activities by the members.

Kathy Smith was presented with the Dakin cup which she won with her playing partner, Alan Wardrop.

Laura Courage, winner of the Ladies Winter Pais with her playing partner Sue Lees

Janie Hartle was the winner of the Ladies Summer Singles

Liz Vizard and Jackie Reed were the winners of the Ladies Pairs Summer Singles

Evening entertainment from 3 piece band, Sirius.

Farewell to Andrew

The Lady Captain, Brenda Gilbey, and some of the lady members said their farewell to General Manager, Andrew Salter with a presentation of a gift from the lady members. Wishing Andrew all the best in his new endeavours.

Ladies Annual Dinner

The Ladies Annual Dinner was held on the last Friday of January in the Long Room in the Clubhouse, which was decorated with golden balloons and daffodils. The ladies enjoyed an excellent meal and were subsequently entertained by Phoenix, an Accapella trio who positively encouraged audience participation.

Prizes and thank you gifts were given by Lady Captain, Brenda Gilbey.

The England Golf Medal was awarded to Tracy Poulsom and all our good wishes go to her for success in the England Golf Regional Final to be held on 31st May at Muswell Hill Golf Club, Middlesex.

Tracy was also awarded the LGU Breakthrough Brooch for the September Medal Main Club with Sue Hay taking the Senior Section Brooch.

Winter Eclectic prizes went to Jackie Reed for Division 1 and Kathy Smith for Division 2.

With Carolyn Sykes and Barbara Hall being respective runners up.

Summer Eclectic prizes went to Carolyn Sykes with Jackie Reed as runner up in Division 1 and Marion Gatland for Division 2 with Bie Clinton as runner up.

Jackie Reed recorded the most birdies of 2016 with Marion Gatland in second place and Both Jo Eames and Anne Thorpe scoring eagles on the 4th and 16 respectively.

Brenda gave thank you gifts to the ladies who have served on her committee and also to those who have helped to run various teams or competitions over her captaincy year.

As always it was lovely to welcome old friends and staff to out ladies dinner.

Ladies Christmas Fun Day

The Ladies Christmas Fun Day took place this week on Tuesday 6th December. After a foggy start 30 Sweetwoods Park ladies took to the course for the Christmas Fun Day competition. Jackie Reed, Annette Chivers and Joyce Lamb made up the winning team so congratulations to them.

The team who came second consisted of  Sue Hay, Anne Burton-Gow and Helen Yates and third place went to Kathy Smith, Maureen Sinclair and Hazel Tebbutt so further congratulations here.

Prizes were also up for grabs for nearest the pin and the longest drive competition and Julia Bradbury stole the show as winner of the best Christmas jumper!

Thanks to all ladies who attended and thank you to Maureen Sinclair and Aileen Oliver for organising such a successful event.

The Division 3 team ended the 2016 season with a celebratory dinner

Captains Cup 2016

The sun shone for our Captain’s Cup weekend which was played in the original Ryder Cup format with G.B. versus U.S.A.
The ladies entered into the spirit of the fun weekend with a range of union jack or stars and stripes outfits and accessories and some of the USA team performed a cheerleading routine complete with pom poms to spur on their team.
It was a very close match and team USA were able to hold on to their one match advantage from the Saturday as the single matches on Sunday were honours even, so well done to Vice Captain Marion Gatland’s team for just pipping Lady Captain Brenda Gilbey’s team.

Ladies Invitation Day 2016

doreen-and-helen

Another very successful day in the Ladies Section calendar with the Ladies Invitation which took place yesterday, Tuesday 6 September. Weather wise the skies were certainly threatening but the rain held off, leaving just a very humid day. A total of 47 players attended with guests from local clubs as well as some from Somerset and deepest Kent. It was a high scoring competition with the winning pair coming in with 44 points.

Once again the ladies section excelled themselves with their baking skills at the half way house! Thank you to all those who participated with the day and those who helped with the organisation of the event

Many prizes were up for grabs on the day!

Ladies Open – 27th July

So after months of planning the ‘big day’ for the inaugural Sweetwoods Ladies Open came! Along with it – rain! Two weeks of glorious sunshine and then just what we didn’t need was the weather to change! 96 ladies (32 teams of 3) were still smiling on the first tee and they remained that way! The weather in the end was insignificant. They just loved the ‘Royal Flush’ format (hardly any of them had played it before) and it was a HUGE success! Novelty value and the ‘not knowing’ how many scores were required until they got to the green added to the ‘fun element’ of the day!

The Sweetwoods team from the ladies section, the bar and catering staff and of course the condition of the course presented by the green keeping staff helped make the day so successful.

We had the most exotic ‘half-way’ house, which was run by the ladies section – what a talented team of bakers we have! Savoury platters and cakes were devoured by the competitors as they passed by the clubhouse.

Finally, a lovely spread was produced by the catering staff, followed by the prize giving of ‘bags theme’.

Lady Captain, Brenda Gilbey has already received many complimentary emails about the day and promises of teams returning to play next year, the date already set in the Sweetwoods calendar of Wednesday 26th July 2017.

Complimentary Ladies Taster Days

On Thursday 14th and Friday 15th July complimentary Ladies Taster Days took place at Sweetwoods Park. Held in conjunction with Brenda, Amanda from the marketing team, Andrew and Matt. This was an England Golf initiative to try and get more females experiencing the golfing world with their nationwide #thisgirlgolfs campaign.

10 ladies attended on the Thursday evening session and 4 ladies on the Friday afternoon. The ladies were shown around the course and clubhouse, received a 45 minute tuition session with Matt and an opportunity to ask questions afterwards over a glass of Pimm’s. All ladies who attended received a 2 ball voucher to come back and play the course as well as an invitation to attend the ladies roll-up. Great feedback was received from all the ladies with the course and facilities impressing all. It is hopeful that we may welcome some ladies back as Sweetwoods Park members in the near future.

kathleen rider foursomes

Sweetwoods Park came 4th  with a total of 66 points in the Kathleen Rider Foursomes played at a rather ‘windy’ Bognor Regis GC on 15th June. The team comprised Brenda Gilbey, Lady Captain, plus her Vice Captain, Marion Gatland who also had the highest pairs score on the day. The other Sweetwoods pair was Tracy Poulsom and Bie Clinton.

Marion Gatland and Jackie Pollock

Two Ladies teams from Sweetwoods entered the Ifield Ladies Open on May 25th and although neither team won we had some success with Marion Gatland taking the Longest Drive prize and Jackie Pollock taking the Nearest the Pin.

margot mulvey 1

Past and Present members of the ladies committee represented Sweetwoods at the Margot Mulvey’s memorial day at Horne park on April 9th.

Although they were not successful, Barbara Podbury, who was a close friend of Margot was a member of the winning team.  Well done Barbara!

Due to the Generosity of those taking part in the memorial day the organisers were able to raise the grand total of £3961 for St Catherine’s Hospice.

Laura putting out 2016

On the 18th March, Laura the ladies Captain for 2015 putted out on the 18th hole ending what has been a fantastic year.

Brenda Driving off 2016On the 1st tee, Brenda drove off signifying the start of her year as ladies captain.  We wish her luck and look forward to an exciting year ahead.
